PROJECT OVERVIEW

Get on the X Factor from your couch

Basically we created an app where you could record you and up to 3 other people lip-syncing a song, it would put that in one of 9 different music video styles and then make a full HD TV advert that would be played on TalkTalk's X Factor TV Idents every Saturday and Sunday over 12 weeks.

Challenge

Every year TalkTalk sponsor the X Factor and for the past three years I've done my best to use that opportunity as a way to explore what it means to sponsor a show in a way that puts its fans at the heart of it. This year is no exception and arguably the best expression of that exploration.

Solution

We created the most innovate video creation app in the world at the time. The TalkTalk X-Factor MixOff allow you to create stunning, HD videos staring you and up 3 others. Using your mobile, tablet or laptop, you can choose from 9 different tracks to lip-sync over, select from 8 unique video styles to put your performance in and pick from 5 different filters to make it totally unique. This was years before Snapchat or TikTok.

Result

Every week we got thousands of mixes coming from every corner of the UK. By the end of the campaign there were 80,000+ Mixes created, 150,000+ app downloads, 1,000,000+ videos viewed and 140 unique idents aired on TV.

The technology behind the TalkTalk X-Factor Mix Off app is on-par with a start-up funded for a year. Every aspect of this project required new technology that enabled us to created stunning detail and quality from user generated performances.
